Artificial Intelligence & Transportation: Boon or Bane

We have grown up watching 'Small Wonder', 'Irona' the Robot Maid from Richie Rich's castle and many Cyborgs who we fancied on Television. We can recall 'Tarzan' the wonder car which was supposedly a ghost-driven car and trucks from our beloved show, 'Bob The Builder'. Few years ago, such perfect simulations of  humans seemed believable on the screen but the developments in Artificial Intelligence has amazed us with possibilities which are not unlike what we had seen on TV as kids.
It is much-hyped specially in the logistics sector where there is news about driver-less Ubers and Tesla's semi-automated trucks.
With the advances in technology and AI everyday, it is important to note what lies ahead for the transport/ trucking industry.

AI is largely dominated by IT Sector but the need to understand it's implications in all the industries in an urgent need today.

Moving a simple parcel across borders and oceans is interfered by factors which need to be controlled. Such factor if not optimized or controlled can give rise to multiple transportation issues. Since the freight is handled by multiple people, companies need the best strategy to water-tight transportation. Here, AI plays a role to eliminate the traffic and piling up of the inventory at ports, transshipment etc.

Low Labour Costs: If not the Irona and Vicki who could practically unload/load the goods as yet, the automated fleets can cut down a lot of long driving hours, transit time and hence the cost. The decreased costs can help improve profits and of course the service.

Traffic : The route optimization tools of AI plans before-hand the best route for delivery indicating accurate use of resources i.e. fuel and drivers in this case. Such a feature reduces traffic congestion along with optimizing the fleet management.

Smart Vehicles: AI tools can take over from the manned vehicles practically giving the driver a snooze option. It can also detect the health issue and accident-prone zones in advance generating alerts in the system to make it a Smart-Fleet.

Will there be a future Cyborg taking over the entire Trucking Model?
As fast as the technology is taking over all the issues, this could be more than what we can swallow.
Unmanned vehicles would mean unplugging the jobs of truck drivers and shifting the talent/skill in the sector. Is the structure change well thought of against the cost impacts?
The implementation and execution of tools is not suited for the industry as it is still unorganized. Our government has recently granted the infrastructure status to Logistics which has made transportation a very important factor in corporate economies. It affects the entire supply chain of operations and manufacturing due this big leap which ignores our instability.
