Put the Brakes on Fatality

The transport industry, as dynamic and fragmented as it is, carries immense risk. The sector is responsible for making ends meet by transporting goods, from multiple consignors to consignees.Cutting the time and cost becomes so crucial that we end up comprising on the processes and ignore simple yet necessary standards which can be fatal. In carrying the road freight, the trucks/trailers, the drivers and the loading/unloading being the most important elements of the operations; happen to present opportunities for fatal accidents. Safety and precautionary measures need to be incorporated to avoid fatalities as minor ignorance can lead to not just expenses but loss of valuable lives.

The key issues that need to be minimized and measures to avoid accidents are:
1. Manual handling of the freight
Despite the access to automation, transporters use many workers for loading and unloading of the goods. There are multiple consignments to be loaded in the trucks of different sizes and weight. The manual handling of the consignments by the transport operators can cause rework, serious back injuries, slipping of the load and causing irreparable damage to the consignment. Such incidents can be avoided by using equipments like
1. Forklifts
2. Trolleys
3.Pallet jacks
4. Tail gate lifters
The loading/unloading area must be properly lit.
The stacking of the goods must be neat and should be easily accessed to be loaded in the scheduled vehicle.
The operators are suggested to have a good meal and daily exercise to stay fit so as to manage round the clock inspection of the hub and getting the consignments on board.

2.On-site Traffic management
In our country where goods are transported from the remote areas, safety measures are not regulated increasing the risks to the people on the roadways. The duration and route planning is important along with the deliveries stops that requires the trucks to halt midway. The areas around the unloading areas must be marked like the 'Operation zone'

3. Maintenance of the trucks
To a transport company, trucks and man power are a bigger asset than money. The most prominent issues with today's transport industry is the wear and tear of the truck. Inspect your trucks, check the brakes frequently and avoid risking your life and others on the highway.
Many a times due to inaccurate judgement calls by the drivers, the tail lights are damaged while parking. The maintenance team can use LED tail lights instead of the conventional truck lights.
Most importantly, the job of a truck driver is tedious and involves a lot of hard work. Timely provisions and medical aids like health check up stations must be set up at hubs to keep them fit each time before getting them behind the wheels.

4. Systematic record of operations by using a Check-list
Create a check list to validate/inspect the stacking, if the load is placed in the correct pallets, causes for shortage of load, provide the operators with non-slippery footwear, gloves and vests for handling hazardous consignments.
Calculate the time required for loading/unloading and find loop holes to minimize the duration.
