"Be the change that you wish to see"- A Six Sigma initiative
We have often noticed manufacturing firms implementing Six Sigma in their work process, it is the most sought after technique to incorporate for highest quality production, cost cutting and reducing 'muda'. Six Sigma as a philosophy is vast and can be implemented even in the smallest of the tasks. It has multiple facets where each industry can find a tool to improvise and identify the glitches in our routine which is crucial. Hence, it took us no time to acknowledge that there's plenty of opportunity for Kaizen and Fish Bone in a service industry like ours.
Ghatge Patil Transports has been serving its customers for 6 decades now, transporting consignments in the North, West and South for part truck and full truck loads like industrial, food articles, automobile components etc. The peculiarity of GP Transports service is that it has been carrying materials which even though does not give the revenue figures but are important to be transported. For instance, we have the oldest and the most loyal clients giving the consignments of kumkum, incense sticks, wedding cards, bank accounting forms and many other freight which very few logistics firms are ready to transport today.
When we were enlightened about what was Six Sigma, the belts and the tools, we had our doubts if we could quantify our service figures and if we could use the Six Sigma language in our organization. As the session proceeded, we could translate the manufacturing ideologies into a service industry using simple analogy. Our management team included employees of multiple cadres, there was staff from the branch offices, transshipment and head office. Each of us expecting different tools to identify loop holes in our particular daily task. It was an excellent learning curve when we were assigned activities to perform in a team. It gave us a different perspective from the routine work-day, we all could see our work flow on a bigger picture and each one had a different angle of thought to every activity.

It takes effort to turn a cynical crowd into a believing one which the Six Sigma professionals did after endless questions from our management team. We all can agree that Six Sigma is an instrument which is beneficial for each of us if we take a little time out of our daily jobs and eliminate months of re-work, waste and triple lead times!
